  • Welcome to our first Unit in AP literature: Eden - good vs evil. This unit will cover the first 6 weeks of the school year. We will be reading John Steinbeck's novel East of Eden.

Objectives:

  • Exposure to the open essay - practice, models, tips
  • Learn how to closely access passages using DIDLS=Tone
  • Explore tone and voice in Steinbeck's nove, your summer reading, and in your own college essay writing 
  • Learn about Biblical stories and find allusions in your summer reading and East of Eden - exploring the effect of these allusions

 

Assessments:

  • Two complete open essays and several practiced parts/brainstorms on various open essay prompts
  • One College essay and all brainstorming and subsequent drafts
  • 5 seminars - two are graded with 4pt rubric
  • reading quizzes 
  • grammar quizzes

  • Are humans innately sinful/evil?
  • To what extent do we control our moral development and moral choices?
  • What makes a complex character?
  • How do we identify meaning of a work as a whole?

  3. Next class - Tab 3-6 one-line quotes from your summer reading book that addresses the larger themes or meaning as a whole or significant aspects of a character.
  4. Talk with your parents and decide on CU Succeed - you must APPLY by 9/28 @ 6pm
